PROPHECY

“Jessy Ardern is a powerhouse of a writer.”

“[A] witty and powerful new play… The ending, which flings Prophecy into the immediate present, is a punch to the solar plexus.”

She has been blessed with the ability to see the future. Her curse is that no one will ever believe her. In a story that slides between the mythic past and the looming future, Cassandra foretells the events of a war that will overcome her homeland and destroy her family...

…or perhaps that has already happened. If only she could get it straight in her head…

“This play is so remarkable one hardly knows where to start… it's vivid, savage realism. One long shriek of pain and rage. But, being realism, it weaves in gentleness, warmth, and comedy as well... With this play, this author takes another step toward the Governor-General's Award league -- if it doesn't bring her there already.”

Prophecy was first produced in 2016 by Impossible Mongoose Productions (dir. Corben Kushneryk). This production was remounted for Stratford’s Springworks Festival in 2017.

In 2018 the show was produced by The Voiceless Project in Rosebud, Alberta (dir. Paul F. Muir).

Upcoming: Prophecy will be part of Theatre Projects Manitoba’s 2024/2025 season (dir. Suzie Martin).

“The short and powerful Prophecy left me shattered for a moment… it’s a marvellous solo show. Credit the intriguing script by Jessy Ardem which mixes excerpts from Homer’s Iliad, Simone Weill and others in a contemporary framework of ugly beauty.”
